The Texas Art Asylum is the kind of place you could happily spend a few hours inside rummaging through what I like to call, treasure. Amber and I had heard about it, so we had to come see for ourselves. Anybody that has a passion for making cool stuff out of cool junk should put this on their list of places they can find…well…just about anything! Part craft store, part thrift store, part salvage yard and part antique store, their inventory is collected from businesses, institutions and individuals who feel their materials are suitable for reuse.
I walked in, and I wanted to just sprint inside and start rummaging and exploring…walking into a place such as this gives me a ‘high’. I could tell from two feet inside the door I was going to find so much stuff with my name written all over it.
There is no rhyme or reason to the stuff you can find on the isles of this store, which is my kind of place! While they do have the isle’s ‘grouped’ into different types of interests, era’s, and genre’s of junk….the stuff you come across when you start digging is unimaginable. In other parts of the store you can find old dolls, doll heads, doll parts, bottle caps, old ornamental pieces, belt buckles, small furniture pieces, frames, antiques, the bones of things that once were…so much stuff just waiting to catch its second wind.
They have bins and collections of trinkets that you start looking through and the idea’s and plans for their second life start flowing. This is the kind of place you go when you have no idea what you are looking for, or didn’t even have a particular project in mind. Ideas and project potentials manifest in this place.
You can find a wall of books, records and old posters…maybe not intended for ‘re-use’, but all the same, cool finds.
Old photographs…when is the last time you found thousands of these? I thought it was neat to look through these as well, I will be going back for more…all junk has a history and a story, these pictures put a face to the history and stories of all those collected in these bins.
So I have a confession, I took home the coolest guy! He may not be living up to all his potential right now, but with a little TLC he will be some major eye candy around my house or back patio, wherever he ends up! You can tell somebody before me had the idea and intentions of turning a mere mannequin into a piece of fabulous art. I had to snatch him up and bring him home so my daughter and I could finish what another ‘like-mind’ started! I also picked up a few bags of mosaic tiles and trinkets while I was there to start my collection of cool junk I would finish him with! I will have to keep readers updated on our progress. We also could use a little help naming this guy! Feel free to help us out.
